Why newborn babies born underweight has been a question lurking around for awhile . According to the Environmental Health Perspectives the cause for this are the high levels of air pollution pregnant women have been exposed to. The classes of air pollution that have been focused on the most are: inhalable particulate matter (PM) which is caused by the combustion of fossil fuels used by industries, transportation, and burning firewood. They also can include dust or sea salt particles. Payam Dadvand states that “Those centers that have higher levels of air pollution report higher risks of low birth weights compared with those centers that have lower levels of pollution.” If a child is born underweight he or she has a higher risk of infant mortality and childhood diseases which later cause health problems throughout the child's life; including diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
I find articles on how we humans are destroying our world interesting. Why? Well, because I want to know what's going on in the world I'm living in. This article is very interesting. It talks about the fact that air pollution not only harms us, but can harm a person who hasn't even had the chance to know what all this is. I never knew the air pollution was so high that it could affect an unborn baby. It's scary to know that very little is being done about this. I remember once looking outside on a full moon and seeing it yellow and being told it was because we were seeing it through smog. Which I though was pretty gross.
As for what is being done about this, in the article it states the World Health Organization is recommending that countries establish air – pollution standards to help keep air pollution low. The US Environmental Protection Agency recently lowered its air pollution goal from 15mg-3 to 12 mg-3, which is providing health benefits worth between $4 billion and $9.1 billion annually by 2020. I'm glad that words are being put to action and the benefits are more than I expected them to be. Baby steps is what will get us through this which is fine; all that matters is that there's progress.
