Question: How many planets (Earth) does it take to support your lifestyle?
2
Directions:
1) Make an “Avatar” of yourself
2) Answer using DETAILED answers to each lifestyle question
Questions:
I eat poultry and pork every few weeks and fish once or twice a week.
Why do you think this affects your footprint? Explain.
This affects the animals being used to feed those who eat meat nearly every day like me. Along with the animals being slaughtered they aren’t being cared for correctly (unless you buy organic) they’re being feed corn or some other mixture and injected hormones to make them grow faster which isn’t healthy for them or the intakes.
Why do you think this affects your footprint? Explain.
It causes more pollution in the air because the trucks/airplanes have to transport all the food from one place to another.
2. How much trash do you generate?
We recycle a lot in my house in the garage there’s a separate place where we go to put all our recyclable materials.
What affects does this have on your footprint? Why?
Well since I recycle what can be recyclable as much as I can it helps the planet by not having to cut down more trees to make paper or have all that plastic thrown into the ocean.
4) Which housing type best describes your home?
A townhouse that contains nine units.
Why would this make a difference in your impact?
Since it’s not big apartments the construction work for it wasn’t as bad to the environment compared to the apportionments across the street from me.
5) Do you have electricity in your home?
I do, every unit does.
What are the environmental impacts of electricity? Explain.
It burns fossil fuels which causes use to mine for more creating pollution and destroying the area where the mining is being done.
6) How many people are in your home
Five people.
7) What is your house made of?
The big material is wood.
Which building material is the most energy efficient? Explain.
A concrete block because all you have to do is mix sand, cement, and water it's faster than using wood or steel and it's cheaper.
8) Does anyone of your home’s electricity come from renewable sources? (SDGE= no)
No it does not.
9) How far do you travel by car each week?
Less than 100 miles
Do you carpool or do anything to reduce your impact?
All the time.
10) Do you ride a motorcycle?
I do not.
11) What is the gas mileage in your car/motorbike?
35
12) How often do you drive with someone else?
All the time.
13) How far do you travel by bus/train each week?
I don't travel by bus or train.
14) How many hours do you fly each year?
Fourteen. Seven hours to Nicaragua and seven hours back.
Fill in the following things below:
How many planets (Earth) are needed to provide enough resources to support people if everyone lived like you? Draw the Earths
Draw your ecological footprint breakdown: (Color coordinate your graph)
How many global acres would take to support your lifestyle? Draw the diagram below.
Go back and edit your footprint, and explore scenarios to reduce your footprint
Edit your Footprint by making CHANGES to your lifestyle. List the changes you have made to your lifestyle below and the impact it had on your ecological footprint. Show your new results.
Changes Made:
1) Eating more locally grown food.
2) Recycling all paper waste and buying paper products whenever possible.
3) Purchasing PCR recycled plastic products whenever possible,
4) Having 20-50% of my home's electricity coming from renewable sources.
5) Having meat based products once every few weeks and eggs/milk/dairy once or twice a week.
Impact on my Ecological Footprint: (Draw out NEW results based on changes made)
Reflect on what you learned by doing this activity: It really surprised me how many planets would be needed if everyone lived like me. Honestly I never thought I was impacting the earth that much and that was just me I can't imagine how everybody else's would turn up. But what I liked about this simulation is that it gave you the option to go back and change something and it little things would make the planet numbers go down. I mean the changes I made are ones I can go through with. This activity really shows how much we impact the earth, but also how little changes here and there can make a big difference. I liked this activity it was informing and very fun.
